I stand here, still and settled,
among my eleven sisters,
and feel the Earth beneath my feet
roots sinking deep
spreading wide
rooted
balanced
secure.
Spine straight and with wooded strength
energy flows
from roots to top
shoulders soft, neck long.
The warmth of the sun shines on my crown,
birds and breezes in my loose, free hair.
Looking at each face
in this circle,
this council of elders,

I hazily awaken
from winter’s deep slumber -
the towhees, wrens, and chickadees help
with their beautiful daily songs of offering
The sun
our beautiful star
encourages me to rise
earlier and earlier
with brightness and warmth
Inner ponderings stir and whirl
coats turn to sweaters
garden begins to whisper
time for this year’s work to begin

december – for mothers
early morning fog
chilly days
deciduous trees, stripped of their greenery, rest.
it is our sign
to do the same.
these silvery days
remind us to pull close,
spend quiet time
with family, friends,
and with ourselves, quietly
and honor our own breath.
simply breathing
in and out, in and out
in awareness
our heart slows
and our thoughts regain balance and perspective.
